The Experience of Having a Velcro Dog: Life with Kodah the Shadow
Have you ever heard of the term 'velcro dog'? It refers to those dogs that stick to you like glue and follow you around everywhere, just like a shadow. This term perfectly describes my experience with Kodah, my German Shepherd x Malinois mix. Until recently, I wasn't familiar with this specific phrase, but now I can say that Kodah is 100% my velcro dog.
Kodah’s Favorite Things
Like most dogs, Kodah's needs are simple, and it doesn't take much to make him happy. His favorite things include me, playing with the hose, chasing his ball, enjoying good food, spending time with my Husband, and hanging out with Ned and Fred, our other dogs. Despite my initial reluctance to add another dog to our family after losing one of our beloved pets, Kodah has found his place in our home and in my heart.
Always by My Side
Living with a velcro dog means never being alone. Whether I'm working in my office, relaxing on the couch, or even just moving around the house, Kodah is right there beside me. He has a habit of positioning himself strategically to always stay within my reach, making sure he never misses a moment of my day.
Permanently Stuck in the ‘On’ Position
Even during moments of relaxation, Kodah is always alert and ready to move at a moment's notice. While he may look intimidating due to his breed, he's far from being a protective guard dog. In fact, he's more likely to seek comfort behind me in uncertain situations rather than take on a protective role. Despite his bark being worse than his bite, his loyalty and companionship are unmatched.
Living with a velcro dog like Kodah has its challenges, but the love and devotion he shows make every moment worthwhile. While he may be permanently stuck in the 'on' position, I wouldn't have it any other way.
